Broken Saints

Sundance Film Festival’s Saints Far From Broken

– Award-winning Online Epic “Broken Saints” is Reborn into Stunning 4-disc DVD –

VANCOUVER February 9, 2005
– Canadian Creator/Director/Writer/Producer, Brooke Burgess, is pleased to announce that his multi-award-winning graphic novel Broken Saints is premiering this week on CBC’s On Demand services, and that he will be revealing his brand new  4-disc collector’s edition DVD set in the U.K. February 17th & 18th at the prestigious Festival of Future Entertainment. At the Festival, Burgess will be speaking alongside such luminaries as Chris Yapp, Head of Public Sector Innovation, Microsoft and many more pioneers in the interactive business.

Burgess, a former Electronic Arts Producer, began Broken Saints as an online graphic novel that uses Macromedia’s Flash to tell a dark, thought-provoking story.  The creators felt that there was lots of ‘entertainment’ on the web, but nothing that really compelled viewers to become involved with the direction of a tale or its characters. The idea was spawned to create something literate, graphic, and moving (emotionally AND spatially). A new level of Flash animation, anime-inspired artwork, poetic prose, and a haunting soundtrack were woven together seamlessly to create a mesmerizing new form of storytelling dubbed ‘cinematic literature’.   The saga is almost 12 hrs long, with nearly 11:45 of this being scored with award-winning original compositions.

The story follows the harrowing quests of four very different protagonists – a bitter American programmer, an aging Japanese priest, a troubled Arabic mercenary, and a mysterious Fijian girl – after they receive the same terrifying dreams and visions. Through their individual journeys, the four strangers discover that they are cryptically linked to each other … And to a plot to enslave humanity.

“I honestly hold in my heart that the saga of four ‘Saints’ facing the engineered ‘end of the world’ against a backdrop of political intrigue, technological conspiracy, and religious oppression  is a dark mirror for what is happening in the world today.”
-          Brooke Burgess

The online version of Broken Saints received so many accolades, including the 2003 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Online Animation (complete list of awards & reviews are printed below) , that Telefilm Canada provided Burgess with a grant to develop the saga into a 4-disc DVD set. The result was one which has thrown Burgess into discussions with excited distributors around the world. The DVD set features completely revamped art and effects for the 12 hr ‘cinematic literature epic’ seen by over 4 million people worldwide; incredible 5.1 Dolby Surround remix of the entire series, including optional voice narration from industry professionals such as William B Davis (THE X FILES), Kirby Morrow (DRAGONBALL Z), David Kaye (BEAST WARS), Michael Dobson (TRANSFORMERS ARMADA), and Emmy Award Winner Janyse Jaud; over 4 hrs of additional features including Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes, Documentaries, Fan Films, Concept Galleries, and Slideshows; extensive DVD-Rom features and countless hidden Easter Eggs; beautifully re-scored and remixed soundtrack by acclaimed series composer Tobias Tinker, as well as inspiring licensed pieces from Mozart, Luigi Cherubini, John Taverner, Radiohead, and Depeche Mode.

Swelling from the core team of three web pioneers to nearly 100 artisits, volunteers, technicians, and industry professionals – and completed in less than 9 months – there is already talk with major publishers and studios of a Broken Saints video game, full print comic and even a live-action film. Glowing reviews of the DVD set are coming in fast-and-furious. As of just yesterday:
“It’s a movie that, superficially, seems to have infinite factors going against it, yet some how managed to not only over come those obstacles, but set a new bar in the process.”  “It’s brilliant.”
- William M. Nash, CHUD.com   http://chud.com/dvd/1450
Other very recent reviews include:
“The additions are fantastic and the extras are encyclopedic … don’t hesitate.”
- Tycho, Penny Arcade January 12, 2005

“In a collage taking aspects from comic books, animation, film and prose, Broken Saints is revolutionary in style… watch with the lights out and a jaw locked.”
- Scott Green, Ain’t It Cool News December 3, 2004

“One word can be used to describe Broken Saints. Epic.”
- Matthew Bath, DIGIT Magazine November Issue, 2004
